What happens when you hide God’s Word in your heart? asks Dr. Neil C. Stewart in a very inspiring article published in Table Talk magazine September 2022?
“The power of God enters our hearts. The book of God begins with a display of effortless, verbal omnipotence. God’s word obliterates the status quo. When He speaks, nothing remains the same; everything changes…What might happen if you hid such power in your hearts?” (Emphasis mine)
Omnipotent Benefit #1 Change?
What change can be made? The writer of Proverbs chapter eight says:
“Listen to me! For I have excellent things to tell you. Everything I say is right, for I speak the truth and hate every kind of deception” Proverbs 8:6,7 (NLT).
How can any human being claim that? Can you, can I? Of course, the writer and all writings in God’s Word are inspired by God (II Timothy 3:16). But you and I can see an almost incredible change in our behavior even though we battle sin every moment.
How? By filling our hearts and minds with the powerful, God-inspired, sacred scriptures our soul is influenced, our hearts and minds change from our fleshly desires to wanting to please our Creator.
Should I define omnipotent? Yes. The thesaurus gives these antonyms, almighty, all-powerful, invincible, unstoppable, supreme, Godlike. This is the kind of power we are capable of acquiring from God’s Word.
What inspires behavioral change? Think about it? Think, think, think. Yes, the answer is our thoughts. When we focus on God and His Word our thoughts are on Him. This changes our thoughts, and our thoughts change our behavior. Try it, you’ll like it. Focus on God’s will and your will could become one with His. And guess who changed.
You may be asking God to meet a certain request for something. Maybe it’s something that He knows will not be best for you.
True Story
I know of a little Irish girl who was born with brown eyes. When she was old enough to know God, she asked Him why she couldn’t have beautiful blue eyes like her sister. She prayed to God to make them blue. She woke up the next day, looked in the mirror and saw those same brown eyes looking back at her. Why? Our desires are not the only thing that matter. The more you focus on Him and His will, you have to ask yourself, “Is this what God wants for me?”
When Proverbs 3:5 and 6 talk about the desires of the heart, we often think this passage means God will give us what we desire. It says He will give us the desires of our heart. But it means He will give us the desires, cause us to desire what is best to bring glory to Him, not necessarily what we want. That is unless we desire His will. Which is just what we should want, right? If we are truly His followers, if we truly love Him and want to live for HIM and not our selfish desires, our desire will be in accordance with His will. I must insert a quick story here to illustrate this truth.
Ever heard of Amy Carmichael. If not, read all you can about her. She was the girl looking in the mirror at her brown eyes and praying for blue. But God called Amy to the mission field of India where people were dark skinned and had brown eyes. She was able to stain her skin with coffee and pass for their culture. Therefore, she would enter the temple where girls were being used by the priest as a sacrifice to the gods. She rescued many of these girls, helped them escape that prison of sin and took them in, fed them, hid them.
When she, and when you fill your heart and mind with God’s word, you can have the omnipotent benefit of seeing Him and His will. You get to know people by spending time with them. You get to know God by allowing time in His Word and embedding it in your thoughts which as I said above is where your behavior changes.
